The popular Jazz on the Menu mid-winter fundraising event returns for 2014 on Wednesday, February 26. It promises to be once again a special evening of fine food, good wine and great jazz at at least a dozen local venues, most of them Healdsburg and Geyserville restaurants for dinner and small-combo jazz.
Many of the same restaurants that have been with us since 2011 will return again this time, from Baci to Zin, plus some new additions from among the fine new restaurants that have opened in Healdsburg since the last JOTM (like Chalkboard and Cafe Lucia).
All participating restaurants donate 25% of food sales between 6 and 9 pm, and many restaurants also include 25% of alcohol sales. It’s a perfect opportunity for locals to explore a new restaurant, and discover a new favorite, while helping Healdsburg Jazz Festival’s highly successful Music Education Programs at the same time.
Once again, there will be a climactic Celebration Concert at Healdsburg’s Costeaux French Bakery. The George Marsh Quintet will perform, along with the Healdsburg High School Jazz Band to open the night. Of course there will be fabulous Costeaux desserts as well, all from 7:30 – 10:30 that same night.
HHS Jazz Band returns to Costeaux with its line-up from last-year largely intact, once again under the direction of Lorca Hart. You won’t want to miss these talented locals, including (students from left): Noah Foley-Beining – bass; John Dalton-Ballard – drums; Cristian Guerrero – trumpet; Chris O’Connor – clarinet, alto-sax, flute; Millie Unti – tenor sax; Esther Unti – trombone; and Daniel Elizalde – guitar. Lorca Hart is in the foreground.
George Marsh is a drummer and percussionist currently at Sonoma State. Recently he paired with Noam Lemish in their duo CDs Nightfall and Yes And, and has also recorded with W.A. Mathieu, Randy Vincent, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia and Terry Riley. He has also taught for many years at UC Santa Cruz, and wrote the instructional manual Inner Drumming.
A hand-picked quintet plays with Marsh, including Jason Gillenwater on tenor sax, Jean Michel Hure on guitar, Ken Cook on piano, and Cliff Hugo on bass. “It’s a great group!” enthused the bandleader, who promises never to play the same thing once.
After-Party tickets are only $15. Order early online, as this After-Party has sold out in previous years. $15 tickets at the door subject to availability. Tickets are available online on our Tickets page.

@Sharon Pillsbury – The HJF’s educational programs certainly reach the Geyserville Schools. We had a great time with Marcus Shelby’s History of the Blues assembly went very well there at the beginning of the month. A few kids in attendance from Geyserville decided to join the Black History Month Student Jazz Choir that will perform at the Raven on Feb 28. Also look for the tremendously popular Operation Jazz Band for your 5th graders in the coming week!
This event sounds like a perfect opportunity to fulfill my jazz class concert req! The only issue is that i have class on the 26th :( All i need to know is what time these jazz events are happening at their respective restaurant. I appreciate the help
Dinners at all restaurants are served from 6 – 9 pm. Maybe you can attend before or after your class?
This sounds like a great event and we are happy that Geyserville restaurants will be particpating. We would like to promote this event, but want to make sure Geyserville schools have the opportunity to share in the Music Education in the Schools benefits. Could you send us more info on this program.
Thanks!
What a wonderful cause! This world would be a sad place with out music in our lives. We would be happy to participate in helping you raise money. Please let us know if you find a way to utilize us.
