Time: 7 p.m., one show only
Where: Paul Mahder Gallery, 222 Healdsburg Ave.
Tickets: $25, SOLD OUT.

Alan Broadbent, whom Charlie Haden called “one of the most original improvisers in the world of jazz,” will perform for one night only in Healdsburg at the Paul Mahder Gallery, on Sunday, August 7. He will perform in duo format with bassist Darek Oles. We’re lucky and honored to book these two on their current tour, it will be a stimulating and melodic show that edges beyond national and musical borders.

The New Zealand-born pianist made his reputation playing with musicians on the scale of Bud Shank, Chet Baker, and of course Haden himself, for whom he was a frequent creative partner. He also played with Natalie Cole on her award-winning album “Unforgettable… With Love,” and toured with her in support of that album.

Much of his work has been as arranger and conductor in support of vocalists, like Diana Krall, Sheila Jordan, Paul McCartney and others. In fact he’s spoken about the influence that vocalists have had on his own playing, saying, “You can have a pianist’s technique if you like, but the feeling has to come from that same singing place.”

Darek-Oles-(Double-bass)His most recent commercial CD featuring his work as a soloist, “Heart to Heart,” earned a five-star rating from DownBeat. The two-time Grammy winning pianist and composer has performed in Healdsburg several times, including in 2006 with Quartet West with Haden, Ernie Watts and Billy Hart; and with Charlie Haden in duo performance in 2011 and again in 2013.

He will be accompanied by Darek Oles (Oleszkiewicz) on bass, a native of Poland who has lived and worked in the U.S. jazz scene his 30 years. His style has been compared to his mentor Charlie Haden in his work with Brad Mehldau, Dianna Reeves and Charles Lloyd, and he’s appeared on some 100 CD albums. Since 2002 Oles has been a jazz faculty member at the University Of California in Irvine.
