When: Saturday, Aug. 30, 4 – 6 pm
Where: Seasons of the Vineyard, 113 Plaza St., Healdsburg

Next Saturday afternoon’s entry in the Jazz It UP! series at Seasons of the Vineyard, on Aug. 30, takes a decided turn to the south, with songstress Maria Bija appearing with two stellar local musicians, Christian Foley-Beining on guitar and Kendrick Freeman on percussion.

Maria Bija formerly performed under the name Maria Jameau, and she was signed to the Challenge label in 2010 when discovered performing at the Healdsburg Farmers Market.  For the upcoming Season at the Vineyard performance, Maria tells us “We’ll be performing Brazilian music from the songbooks of Djavan,  Antônio Carlos Jobim,  Caetano Veloso, and others in the styles of MPB, Bossanova and Samba.”

In case you’re wondering what MPB is, Maria explains, “Musica Populeira Brasiliera translates to Brazilian popular music. This is different than the more traditional genre of samba and the Latin Jazz genre of Bossanova.  Artists in the MPB genre that we cover include Djavan & Bebel Gilberto.”

Maria also directs a children’s choir organization called the Bija Children’s Choir, open to ages 5-18 yrs in leveled groups, based out of the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.  People can visit her website, www.mariabija.com and follow links for more information.

Music starts at 4 pm, and the tasting bar is usually full of wine-lovers and jazz fans until Seasons closes at 6 pm. Don’t be late, and show your support of Healdsburg Jazz and Ferrari Carano for sponsoring these Jazz It Up! performances. You can find a full schedule on our website here.
