Bennett FriedmanDrummer Tana to Join Professor’s Quartet

The Music Department of Santa Rosa Junior College presents a jazz concert by the Bennett Friedman Quartet on Friday, November 15, at 8 PM in Newman Auditorium on the Santa Rosa campus.

The concert features Akira Tana on drums, Larry Dunlap on piano, and Cliff Hugo on bass. Admission to the event is $10 general and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door only. There is a $4 fee for parking on campus. Proceeds from the concert benefit the SRJC Foundation Jazz Studies Fund.

This concert marks the first time drummer Akira Tana will perform with the quartet. A native of San Jose, and again residing in the Bay Area, Tana spent 20 years living in New York City, performing with jazz greats such as Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Zoot Sims, Milt Jackson, and many others.

He holds a degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard University, and a degree in percussion from New England Conservatory.

Larry Dunlap has served as pianist for British diva Cleo Laine since 1983. He often performs and records with his wife, vocalist Bobbe Norris, and has appeared with Joe Williams, Gerry Mulligan and Art Farmer.

Bassist Cliff Hugo has spent many years with the Art-rock band Supertramp. He has also performed with Ray Charles, Melissa Manchester, and Willie Bobo among others. He is currently on the Jazz Faculty at SSU. 

Saxophonist Bennett Friedman has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, and the Russian River Jazz Festival. He has been featured as a soloist with Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Natalie Cole, and Marvin Gaye.

Friedman has taught Jazz Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College since 1977. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant for jazz composition. The performance will feature compositions of Tadd Dameron, Fats Waller, and Ivan Lins, as well as original arrangements by Friedman.
